A man asked permission to see the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Thereupon, he said: Let him in. What an evil brother of his people he is!

Hadith_Text

A man asked permission to see the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Thereupon, he said: ""Let him in. What an evil brother of his people he is!""

Explanation

A man asked permission to see the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). So he said: ""Let him in. What an evil brother -or son- of his people he is!"" When the man sat with him, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was cheerful and at ease with him. When the man left, ‘Ā’ishah said to him: ""O Messenger of Allah, when you saw the man you said such and such about him, but then you met him with a cheerful face and you were at ease with him!"" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""O ‘Ā’ishah, when have you known me to be rude? The worst person in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection is the one whom people avoid for their evil."" That man was evil, and that was the reason why the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said about him in his absence what he deserves in order to warn people of his evil so that they would not be deceived by him. So if you see a person who is wicked and corrupt but has enchanted people with his eloquence, it is your duty to expose his corrupt character to people so that they would not be deceived by him. How many a man with an eloquent tongue and impressive style whom when you see you admire his figure and when he speaks you listen to his speech, but there is no good in him, so it is a duty to make this known to people. As to being nice to the man, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did so in order to appease him. Scholars stated that appeasement is required in dealing with others, unlike adulation and compromise. Compromise that leads to forfeiting a religious obligation or committing a prohibition or overlooking it is absolutely impermissible

Convey from me even one verse, and narrate from the Children of Israel, and there is no sin in that. And whoever intentionally tells a lie against me, let him assume his seat in Hellfire

Hadith_Text

ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Convey from me even one verse, and narrate from the Children of Israel, and there is no sin in that. And whoever intentionally tells a lie against me, let him assume his seat in Hellfire.""

Explanation

Meaning of Hadīth: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says to his nation: Convey to people the knowledge you have inherited from me, from the Qur'an or the Sunnah, even if what you convey is as little as one single verse from the Qur'an, on condition that the conveyer is knowledgeable of what he conveys and comprehends it. The command to convey applies when it is an obligation to do so. If it is not an obligation, such as in case there are preachers in his town who call to Allah and teach people about their religion, then he is not obliged to convey

If Allah wills to show mercy to a people, He takes the soul of their prophet before them, thus making him a forerunner and an intercessor for them

Hadith_Text

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""If Allah wills to show mercy to a people, He takes the soul of their prophet before them, thus making him a forerunner and an intercessor for them. Whereas, if He wills to destroy a people, He punishes them whilst their prophet is alive, witnessing their destruction, thus, consoling him by their destruction as they disbelieved in him and disobeyed his orders.""

Explanation

As indicated by the Hadīth, if Allah, the Almighty, wills good for a certain people, He causes their prophet to die before them, and thus he gets to Paradise ahead of them and becomes their intercessor. A similar meaning was expressed in another Hadīth, in which the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I shall be there at the Basin before you.” In other words, I will be there before you so as to get the water for you. “And if He wills to destroy a people, He punishes them whilst their prophet is alive, witnessing their destruction.” This is similar to what had befallen the people of Prophet Nūh and other prophets (peace be upon them). It is as if Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to tell them about the favor and kindness of their Lord who sent him as a source of mercy for this Muslim Ummah. In the Qur’an, He says: {And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds} [Sūrat al-Anbiyā': 107] Allah, the Almighty, promised the Muslims that He would not punish them while the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was still alive among them, and He even bestowed more of His favor and bounty upon them. He says: {But Allah would not punish them while you are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.} [Sūrat al-Anfāl: 33]

A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I committed a sin liable to a legal punishment, so inflict it upon me

Hadith_Text

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ""O Messenger of Allah, I committed a sin liable to a legal punishment, so inflict it upon me."" As the time of the prayer came, he offered the prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. When the prayer was over, he said: ""O Messenger of Allah, I committed a sin liable to a legal punishment, so apply the Book of Allah to me."" He asked: ""Have you offered the prayer with us?’ He said: 'Yes.’ He said: ""You have been forgiven.""

Explanation

A man came and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I did something that entails the imposition of a legal punishment.” Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “He did not ask about it”, meaning: the sin that entailed the legal punishment, because, as believed by some, he already came to know through divine revelation about the sin committed by this man as well as that he was forgiven. “As the time of the prayer came, he offered the prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). The prayer here refers to one of the obligatory prayers or the ‘Asr prayer in particular. After finishing the prayer, the man got up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I committed a sin liable to a legal punishment, so apply the Book of Allah to me”, meaning: the relevant divine ruling based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah. In other words, apply to me whatever is applicable in my case, be it a legal punishment or something else. Thereupon, the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon, asked: “Have you not offered the prayer with us?” As the man replied in the affirmative, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah has forgiven your sin – or pardoned your legal punishment.” The sub-narrator was doubtful about it. The legal punishment, here, may involve a discretionary penalty or something else, but it does not refer to such prescribed punishments as applicable in the cases of adultery and drinking alcohol, for example. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not ask the man about the specific sin he had committed, for he had learned about some excuse for him, and so he wanted to spare him the due punishment

Make haste to perform the Witr prayer before the morning

Hadith_Text

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Make haste to perform the Witr prayer before the morning.""

Explanation

The Hadīth indicates the recommendation to delay the Witr prayer until the last part of the night. However, the one who delays his Witr prayer to the last part of the night should be cautious to perform it before dawn. The time for voluntary night prayer ends with the break of dawn, so, if dawn broke before he prays Witr, then he misses the virtue of this prayer.

What did the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) use to start with upon entering his house? She said: With the tooth-stick

Hadith_Text

Shurayh ibn Hāni' reported: I asked ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): ""What did the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) use to start with upon entering his house?"" She said: ""With the tooth-stick.""

Explanation

‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) stated that the first thing the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to do on entering his house was using the tooth-stick. The permissibility of using tooth-stick is general at all times, and it is emphasized at the times recommended in Sunnah, such as when a person enters his house. Perhaps the reason for this is to remove the usual effects of talking too much as a result of gathering with others.

From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say

Hadith_Text

Wāthilah ibn al-Asqa‘ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""From the gravest of lies is someone who ascribes himself to other than his biological father, or claims to have seen something in a dream which he actually never saw, or ascribes something to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he did not say.""

Explanation

From the worst of lies in Allah's sight is that a man ascribes himself to someone who is not his biological father, or that someone else ascribes a man to other than his biological father and that man approves of such ascription. This is indeed a monstrous falsehood. Also from the worst types of lying in Allah's sight is that a person claims that he saw something in a dream which he never really saw. Another grave and severe type of lie in Allah's sight is to ascribe to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) something that he never said: did, or approved of.

Give it to him, for the best among you are those who settle their debts in the best manner

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) demanding repayment of a loan in such a rude manner that vexed the Companions and they were about to harm him, but the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Leave him, for he who has a right is entitled to demand it. Give him a camel of the same age as his."" They said: ""O Messenger of Allah, we found none but older than his."" He said: ""Give it to him, for the best among you are those who settle their debts in the best manner.""

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had borrowed a young camel from a man, so the man came to him demanding the repayment of this debt. The man made his demand in a very rude manner that vexed the Companions of the Prophet to the extent that they wanted to hit him because of his rudeness and harshness with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). However, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let him say whatever he wants and do not harm him in any way, for the one who has a right is entitled to demand his debtor to repay his debt and the like, yet he has to do so within the limits of courtesy. As for cursing, slandering, and insulting, they are not among the manners of the Muslims. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered some of the Companions to give the man a camel of the same age as his. They came back and said: We only found a camel that is older than his (and, thus, of more value). So he said: Give him a camel that is older than his camel, for indeed the best of you in dealing with people and the best in terms of reward are those who fulfill their obligations in the best of ways, whether it is the settlement of a debt or otherwise.

There is an hour at night that no Muslim happens to be asking Allah, the Almighty, any good of this world or the Hereafter except that He will give it to him, and this occurs every night

Hadith_Text

Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying: ""There is an hour at night that no Muslim happens to be asking Allah, the Almighty, any good of this world or the Hereafter except that He will give it to him, and this occurs every night.""

Explanation

Every night, there is a time when supplications are answered. No Muslim makes supplication during this time that does not involve something prohibited except that Allah answers it. It is the last third of the night as stated in other authentic texts.
