By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give

Hadith_Text

‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: An amount of money, or some war captives, were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) which he distributed, giving some men and leaving others. He was then informed that the ones he had not given anything expressed their frustration by this. Upon that, he praised Allah, extolled him, and then said: ""By Allah! I do give a man and I leave another, and the one that I leave is more beloved to me than the one that I give. However, I give to those whom I see in their hearts fear and anxiety, and as for the ones whom I do not give anything, I leave them to the richness and good that Allah has put in their hearts. One of them is ‘Amr ibn Taghlib."" ‘Amr ibn Taghlib said: ""By Allah, I would not exchange those words that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said (about me) for the most precious red camels.""

Explanation

‘Amr ibn Taghlib (may Allah be pleased with him) reports to us that an amount of money or a number of war captives were brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he distributed that. He gave to some men in order to reconcile their hearts with Islam, and left others because he trusted them, due to the strong faith and certitude which Allah granted to them. He was then informed that those whom he did not give anything spoke words of reproach about him among themselves, thinking that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) had given certain people because of they were more religious. Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gathered them and stood up to speak. He praised Allah and glorified Him with words that befit His Majesty, and then said: ""By Allah! I give some men and leave others, and the ones I do not give are dearer to me than those whom I give."" He meant that giving to some people and leaving the others did not mean that he loved the former more than the latter. Rather, he actually loved those who did not receive anything more than those to whom he gave. He then explained the reason for this, saying: ""However, I give to those I see in their hearts fear and anxiety,"" meaning that he gave them because of the dissatisfaction and annoyance they would have felt if they had not received some of the spoils of war. So he gave them in order to gain their loyalty and appease their anxiety. He added: ""…and as for the ones whom I do not give anything, I leave them with the richness and good that Allah has put in their hearts,"" meaning that I left them and did not give them, leaving them with what Allah has given them, which is contentedness and richness of the soul. When he said ""good"" he meant strength of faith and certainty. he then said that ‘Amr ibn Taghlib was one of those people, meaning that he was one of those whom he did not give because of the strength of his faith and certitude. According to another narration, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Verily, I give to a man while another is dearer to me than him, fearing that he (the former) would be thrown into the Fire upon his face"" [Muslim]. ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said after hearing the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) praising him: By Allah! I would not exchange the praise that I just heard from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with anything, even if I were given, in exchange, the most expensive item of wealth that the Arabs possessed, which was red camels.

Where is the one who was swearing by Allah that he would not do a favor?

Hadith_Text

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard the loud voices of some opponents quarreling at the door. One of them was appealing to the other to deduct his debt and asking him to be lenient, but the other was saying: ""By Allah! I will not do so."" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went out to them and asked: ""Where is the one who was swearing by Allah that he would not do a favor?"" That man said: ""I am that person, O Messenger of Allah. I will give him whatever he wishes.""

Explanation

Hadīth explanation: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) heard two men arguing over a financial matter. Their voices were so loud that he heard them while he was inside his house. He listened to them and heard one of them asking the other to reduce the amount of debt that he owes him or to show him leniency in collecting it. The other man's answer was: ""By Allah! I will not do that."" Thereupon, the Prophet went out to them and asked who it was who was swearing by Allah that he would not do a good deed. One of the two men said: ""I am that person, O Messenger of Allah. I will give him whatever he wishes."" In another narration (about debt forgiveness) reported by Ahmad and Ibn Hibbān: ""The man said: 'If you wish, I will waive the amount they are short of, and if you wish, I will waive part of the original sum.' So he waived the amount they were short of."" This narration was mentioned in this chapter for an obvious reason: to indicate that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sought reconciliation between the two disputing men, either by reducing the loan, or by showing leniency. There is a similar narration relevant to this topic that was mentioned by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim on the authority of Ka‘b ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him). He reported that ‘Abdullāh ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami owed him money, and so when he met him and asked for his money, they argued until their voices became loud. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by them and said: ""O Ka‘b!"" and then gestured with his hand as if he was saying ""half"", so Ka‘b took half of what ‘Abdullāh owed him and waived the other half. The Muslim should strive in doing good deeds, especially in reconciling between people and easing their circumstances. If he sees two people, two groups, or two tribes disputing and fighting one another, he should seek to reconcile between them in order to remove what is causing disunity and hatred and to replace it with brotherhood and love. Doing this is more rewarding than fasting, praying, and giving charity. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Shall I not tell you of what is higher in rank than fasting, praying, and giving charity?"" They said: ""Yes, O Messenger of Allah."" He said: ""Reconciling between two parties."" [Abu Dawūd

Fight in the cause of Allah, for he who fights in the Cause of Allah for a period of time equal to that between two milkings of a she-camel, will be surely admitted to Paradise

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a valley wherein was a little spring of fresh water. He was delighted by it and said to himself: ""If I were to retreat from the people and settle in this valley

Lands will be laid open for you, and Allah will spare you the fight. So, let none of you fail to play with his arrows

Hadith_Text

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say: ""Lands will be laid open for you, and Allah will spare you the fight. So, let none of you fail to play with his arrows.”

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs his Companions that lands will be opened for them without fighting, so none of them should fail to learn how to shoot arrows, because it is the most appropriate thing that Muslims can play with, so long as doing this does not entail neglecting a due right. This is because shooting arrows is one of the things that aid them in fighting in the cause of Allah, which is one of the most excellent objectives and most sublime goals. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used the expression 'play' because souls are naturally disposed to like it, so this was taken into account. However, the greater aim for learning archery is to prepare oneself for fighting in the cause of Allah, the Exalted, not to merely play with arrows.

The Mufarridūn have gone ahead

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""The Mufarridūn have gone ahead."" He was asked: ""Who are the Mufarridūn, O Messenger of Allah?"" He replied: ""Those men and women who frequently remember Allah.""

Explanation

Meaning of the Hadīth: Those who frequently occupy themselves with the remembrance of Allah are distinguished and far exceed others in rewards and blessings. They have done more than others and so they preceded them in goodness. Allah, the Almighty, said: {The men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.} [Sūrat al-Ahzāb: 35] {The men who remember Allah often}, i.e most of the time, especially during specific times of supplication such as in the morning and the evening, and after the obligatory prayers.

May he be disgraced, may he be disgraced, may he be disgraced, he whose parents, one or both, reach old age in his life and he does not enter Paradise

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""May he be disgraced, may he be disgraced, may he be disgraced, he whose parents, one or both, reach old age in his life and he does not enter Paradise (because of his goodness towards them).""

Explanation

The rights of parents and the duty of the children to treat their parents well is immense. Allah, the Almighty, joined their right with His right, the reason for which He created mankind and jinn, as he said: {Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good} [Sūrat An-Nisā’: 36]. Allah commanded us to worship Him, and commanded the children to honor their parents and be kind to them in words and deeds, in return for all the effort that the parents exerted in raising their children and caring for them: {Is the reward for good anything but good} [Sūrat Ar-Rahmān: 60]. The meaning of this Hadīth: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated three times against the person whose parents, either one or both of them, reaches old age and he does not enter Paradise on their account because he did not care for them, honor them, do good to them, and obey them. Obedience to the parents and kindness to them are foremost among the reasons that save a person from the Hellfire. Neglect of their rights is among the foremost reasons that lead to the Hellfire, if that person does not receive Mercy from Allah, the Almighty.

May Allah have mercy upon a man who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy upon a woman who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ''May Allah have mercy upon a man who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens his wife. If she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy upon a woman who wakes up at night and prays, and awakens her husband. If he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face.''

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says a man or a woman deserves Allah's mercy when wakes up at night to pray and wakes up their spouse to pray as well. If one's spouse refuses to wake up because of heavy sleep or laziness, one might sprinkle little water on their face.

A person who is disheveled, dusty, and driven away from doors (maybe so close to Allah) that if he swears by Allah, He will definitely fulfill it for him

Hadith_Text

Explanation

""A disheveled, dusty and driven away from doors person (maybe so close to Allah) that if he swears by Allah, He would definitely fulfill it for him."" He is disheveled because he does not own anything to oil or comb his hair with, nor does he care about his appearance. His body and clothes are dusty due to his extreme poverty. He is driven away from doors because he is of no social standing, so if he knocks on someone's door, they do not let him in

That is a man in whose ears (or he said: in whose ear) the devil urinated

Hadith_Text

‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Mention was made before the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) of a man who slept throughout the night until morning. So he said: ""That is a man in whose ears (or he said: in whose ear) the devil urinated.""

Explanation

In this Hadīth, Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man who slept through night until morning was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). He missed the night prayer, as he slept until dawn broke, or another possible meaning is that he slept until the sun rose and he missed the Fajr Prayer. The Messenger of Allah, therefore, said: ""That is a man in whose ears the devil urinated.” This can be taken literally, because it has been affirmed that the devil eats, drinks, and marries. Therefore, it is possible that he also urinates. It is a real disgrace for a person to be a toilet for the devil. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) specifically mentioned the ears, even though the eyes would have been more appropriate in the context of sleep, to indicate the heaviness of sleep. Ears are more associated with attention. He also mentioned urine, because it goes easily and quickly into cavities, thereby afflicting the whole body with laziness.

The best day the sun has risen over is Friday: on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted into Paradise, and on it he was driven out of it

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""The best day the sun has risen over is Friday: on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted into Paradise, and on it he was driven out of it.""

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that the best day over which the sun has risen is Friday. On Friday, Adam, the father of mankind, was created. Allah created him with His own Hand from dust, and that was on a Friday. On Friday, Allah admitted Adam and his wife into the Garden of Refuge where mankind takes refuge. On Friday, Allah commanded Adam to leave Paradise, and he was not taken out of it as a humiliation, but, rather, it was an action entailed by the wisdom of Allah, the Almighty.
