"Title

If a person falls ill or travels, he shall be credited with whatever good deeds he used to perform while at home and in good health

Hadith_Text

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""If a person falls ill or travels, he shall be credited with whatever good deeds he used to perform while at home and in good health.""

Explanation

If a person habitually performs some pious act when he is healthy or has free time, and then he becomes sick and therefore unable to perform this same deed, Allah, the Almighty, will record for him the reward in full, as if he has actually done it. The same holds true if a person is prevented from doing this usual act by a journey or anything else, like menses.

Benefits

It shows the vast mercy and kindness of Allah towards His servants. If a person becomes unable to do certain good deeds he habitually performs due to a lawful excuse, like travel or illness, while having a firm intention to resume it once he is able, he will have the full reward exactly as if he is healthy and in residence.

When anyone of you meets his brother, let him greet him with peace. If a tree, a wall, or a stone comes between them and then he meets him, let him greet him with peace

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""When anyone of you meets his brother, let him greet him with peace. If a tree, a wall, or a stone comes between them and then he meets him, let him greet him with peace.""

Explanation

It is recommended for a Muslim to greet his fellow Muslim with peace whenever he meets him. Even if they are together and part for some reason and meet again, even shortly, it is recommended to greet him with peace. One should not say that he has just met his brother and there is no need to greet him again. Even if they are separated by a tree, a wall, or a rock, in such a way that they cannot see each other, it is recommended to greet him with peace immediately when they meet.

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Fajr prayer while some women from among the believers, wrapped in their garments, would attend the prayer with him. Then they would return to their homes, and no one would recognize them because of the darkness

Hadith_Text

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Fajr prayer while some women from among the believers, wrapped in their garments, would attend the prayer with him. Then they would return to their homes, and no one would recognize them because of the darkness.

Explanation

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentions that the female Companions used to cover themselves with their garments and attend the Fajr prayer with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). They would then return to their homes after the prayer at the time when the darkness of the night mixed with the faint light of the morning, and the one looking at them would not recognize them because of the remaining darkness.

May Allah fill their graves and houses with fire, as they distracted us from the middle prayer until the sun set

Hadith_Text

‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May Allah fill their graves and houses with fire, as they distracted us from the middle prayer until the sun set.” In another narration: “They distracted us from the middle prayer”, meaning: the ‘Asr prayer. Then he offered it between the Maghrib and the ‘Ishā'. Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The polytheists distracted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) from observing the ‘Asr prayer till the sun became red or yellow. So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""May Allah fill their bellies and graves with fire!""

Explanation

The polytheists kept the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions too preoccupied to offer the ‘Asr prayer till sunset, as they were garrisoned to protect Madīnah against them. Consequently, the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon) invoked Allah, the Almighty, against them, asking Him to fill their stomachs, houses, and graves with fire as a punishment for hurting him and his Companions and distracting them from offering the ‘Asr, which is the best prayer.

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Ishā' prayer until part of the night had passed and it was dark. ‘Umar came to him saying: O Messenger of Allah, come to pray, the women and children have slept. He came out with his head dripping with water and said: Had it not been hard for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to perform that prayer at this hour

Hadith_Text

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Ishā' prayer until part of the night had passed and it was dark. ‘Umar came to him saying: ""O Messenger of Allah, come to pray, the women and children have slept."" He came out with his head dripping with water and said: ""Had it not been hard for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to perform that prayer at this hour.""

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Ishā' prayer until part of the night had passed and the women and children, who are likely unable to stay late at night, had gone to sleep. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and said: “Come to pray, for the women and children have slept.” The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his home and went to the mosque while his head was dripping with water from the ritual bath and he said: ""Had it not been hard for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to perform that prayer at this hour."" This indicates that it would have been better to delay ‘Ishā' prayer were it not for the hardship that would result from waiting for such a long time.

Woe to the heel bones from the Hellfire

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah, ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr, and ‘Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Woe to the heel bones from the Hellfire!""

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) warns against negligence in the performance of ablution and encourages us to perform it perfectly and completely. As the back of the foot (the heel bone) is normally somewhere that water does not reach, it leads to a deficiency in ablution and therefore in prayer, so the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that the heel bones, along with the one who is careless about including them in his Shariah-required purification, will be targeted by torment in the Hereafter.

Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone of you who is in the state of Hadath (minor ritual impurity), until he performs ablution

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone of you who is in the state of Hadath (minor ritual impurity), until he performs ablution.""

Explanation

The wise legislator ordered that anyone who wants to pray must only pray when they are in a good and a beautiful state, because prayer is the firmly established connection between the Lord and His servant. It is the servant's channel to have a confidential talk with Allah. So Muslims are ordered to perform ablution and be free from impurities during prayer, and informed that without purification, the prayer is rejected and not accepted.

Benefits

Prayer occupies high status, as Allah does not accept it without purification. Prayer in a state of impurity, minor or major, is not accepted. Hadath (state of ritual impurity) breaks ablution and invalidates prayer if it happens during its performance. Non-acceptance here means the prayer is invalid and must be repeated. This Hadīth signifies that some prayers are accepted and others are rejected. What is done in accordance with the Shariah is accepted

If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, the ritual bath becomes obligatory

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself (by having sexual intercourse with her), the ritual bath becomes obligatory."" Another version adds: ""even if he does not ejaculate.""

Explanation

If a man sits between a woman's four limbs, i.e. her arms and legs, and he inserts his male organ into her vagina, then it is obligatory on both of them to take a ritual bath in order to remove the major ritual impurity even if no semen is discharged. Penetration on its own necessitates ritual bath.

O son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: The worst of shepherds is the harsh one, so beware of being one of them

Hadith_Text

‘Ā'idh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) visited ‘Ubaydullāh ibn Ziyād and said: ""O son, I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The worst of shepherds is the harsh one', so beware of being one of them."" Thereupon, Ibn Ziyād said to him: ""Sit down, for you are from the chaff of the Muhammad's Companions."" ‘Ā'idh said: ""Was there chaff among them? Chaff only appeared after them and in other than them.""

Explanation

‘Ā'idh ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) visited ‘Ubaydullāh ibn Ziyād, who was the ruler of the Iraqis after his father, and said: ""I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The worst of shepherds is the harsh one'"", i.e. the one who is harsh in looking after camels while herding them, bringing them in and taking them out, shoving them into one another, and overburdening them. He was giving an example of the evil ruler, and the meaning intended here is the harsh ruler who oppresses people and is neither gentle nor merciful with them. The statement: ""Beware of being one of them"" is from the speech of ‘Ā'idh as an advice to Ibn Ziyād. Thereupon, Ibn Ziyād gave the following reply: ""You are nothing but the chaff of them"", i.e. you are not from the virtuous and knowledgeable Companions of the Prophet, or those with high status among them
