A man from among those who were before you was called to account (by Allah on the Day of Judgment). No good deeds were found in his record except that he, being a rich man, used to enter into transactions with people and used to command his servants to show leniency towards those who were insolvent. Allah, the Exalted, said: We are more entitled to this (leniency) than him. Pardon him.

Explanation

""A man from among those who were before you was called to account"", i.e. a man from the previous nations was held accountable by Allah for the actions he had done. ""No good deeds were found in his record"", i.e. he had done no righteous deeds that bring one closer to Allah, the Almighty. ""Except that he, being a rich man, used to enter into transactions with people"", i.e. he used to conduct business transactions with them and give them loans. ""And used to command his servants to show leniency towards those who were insolvent"", i.e. he ordered his servants to be tolerant with those who cannot pay back their debts by giving them respite or by reducing their debt. ""Allah, the Exalted, said: We are more entitled to this (leniency) than him. A Muslim owes another Muslim five rights: responding to the greetings, visiting the sick, following the funerals, accepting the invitation, and responding to the sneezing person

Hadith_Text

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""A Muslim owes another Muslim five rights: responding to the greetings, visiting the sick, following the funerals, accepting the invitation, and responding to the sneezing person.""

Explanation

The Hadīth sheds light on some of the rights that a Muslim has upon his Muslim brothers. The rights that a Muslim has over his brothers are many, but sometimes the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentions particular things, from amongst many other things, out of his care and concern for them. Some of these things include what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""The rights of a Muslim upon another Muslim are five things: returning the greeting,"" i.e. if someone greets you with Salām, then respond to him. Another Hadīth says: ""The right of the Muslim over another Muslim are six: if you meet him then greet him with Salām."" Anyone fulfills these rights properly, then he will be more likely to fulfill the other rights as well. He will fulfill these obligations and rights that involve much goodness and enormous reward from Allah provided that they are done for the sake of Allah. The first of these rights is to give Salām to the Muslim when you meet him, or to return it, as stated in another Hadīth. The second right is to visit the sick, particularly when sickness compels him to stay at home. In this case, it is his right on the Muslim fellows to visit him. The third right is following the funeral processions and escorting the dead. The deceased Muslim has a right upon his brother to accompany his funeral from his house until the place of prayer, whether it’s in the mosque or in another place, then to the graveyard. The fourth right is to answer the invitation. It is the right of the Muslim over his brother to accept his invitation. The fifth right is to respond to the sneezing Muslim. This is because sneezing is a blessing from Allah who lets the air constrained in the different parts of the body go out from the nasal passage so that the sneezing person can relax. Therefore, Allah instructs the sneezer to praise Him for this blessings, and instructs his brother to say to him ""yarhamukallāh (may Allah have mercy upon you)"", and ordered the sneezing person to respond: ""yahdikumullāh wa yuslih bālakum (May Allah guide you and make better your affairs)"". So, the sneezer who doesn’t praise Allah doesn’t deserve these prayers, and he shouldn’t blame anyone except himself.

Benefits

It demonstrates the rights of Muslims upon one another, some of which are obligatory and some recommended. This differs according to the difference of circumstances and persons. Returning the greeting of peace is an individual duty if it is addressed to one person, and a collective duty, if addressed to a group. Visiting the sick is a collective duty. Following the funeral procession is a collective duty, which extends from the starting point or the place of prayer to the place of burial. Accepting the invitation to a wedding banquet is obligatory, with the conditions prescribed in the books of fiqh. It is, however, a confirmed Sunnah in other banquets. With regard to responding to the sneezing person (with the reported supplication), some scholars said it is an individual duty if only one person is present and a collective duty if there is a group of people. Other scholars said it is recommended. It shows the greatness of this religion and how it strengthens the bonds of love and brotherhood among Muslims. It is impermissible to respond to the sneezing person or return a greeting while the imām is giving the sermon, because both are speech, and speaking is prohibited during the sermon.

Hadith_Text

Talhah ibn ‘Ubaydullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man from the people of Najd, with disheveled hair, came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). We could hear his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying: until he came close to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when it then became clear that he was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""There are five (obligatory) prayers during the day and the night."" He said: ""Do I have to perform any other prayer besides these?"" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""No, unless you do so voluntarily."" He added: ""And the fasting of Ramadan."" The man asked: ""Do I have to fast any other days beyond this?"" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""No, unless you do so voluntarily."" Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told him about the Zakah, and the man asked: ""Do I have to pay anything else besides this?"" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""No, unless you do so voluntarily."" Then the man went back and said: ""By Allah! I will neither do more nor less than this."" Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) remarked: ""He will be successful if he proves to be truthful.""

Explanation

A man from the people of Najd went to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). His hair was disheveled and his voice was loud. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) could not understand what he was saying until he went close to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about the religious duties of Islam. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned prayer first, telling him that Allah imposed five daily prayers upon him. The man asked if there were more prayers to be performed besides these five, and the Prophet answered in the negative, unless one wants to pray voluntarily. The Friday prayer is counted among these for being one of the five daily prayers performed on Fridays. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned fasting the month of Ramadan among the obligatory religious duties. The man, again, asked if there were any other days to fast along with Ramadan. The Prophet replied in the negative

We were given of this world what we were given. I am afraid that the reward of our good deeds has been hastened to us in this world

Hadith_Text

Ibrahīm ibn ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf reported that food was brought to his father, ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was fasting (that day), so he said: ""Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umayr was martyred and he was better than me, but only one garment was available to shroud him. It was so small that if his head was covered, his feet remained uncovered, and if his feet were covered, his head remained uncovered. Then the bounties of this world were bestowed upon us generously. Or he said: We were given of this world what we were given. I am afraid that the reward of our good deeds has been hastened to us in this world.” Upon saying this he started crying and left the food untouched.

Explanation

Hadīth eplanation: ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was fasting one day and when it was time to break his fast food was brought to him. Normally the fasting person desires food, but he remembered the state of the earlier Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) for he himself was one of those Companions who migrated from Makkah to Madīnah. He said in humility that Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umayr was better than him. Since scholars stated that the ten companions who were given glad tidings of Paradise are better than the remaining Companions, Ibn ‘Awf's words are interpreted to mean that Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umayr was better than him in terms of his humbleness and modesty, or in terms of being poor and patient. Before Islam, Mus‘ab used to live with his wealthy parents in Makkah who used to pamper and indulge him with luxuries, and he used to wear the best and most extravagant of clothing. When he embraced Islam, his parents abandoned him and completely boycotted him. Then he migrated with the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to Madīnah and was one of the Muhājirīn. The clothes he used to wear in Madīnah was full of holes after being used to wearing the best of clothing in Makkah while he was living with his parents. He left all of that luxury to migrate for the sake of Allah and His Messenger. During the battle of Uhud, the Prophet gave Mus‘ab the flag to hold and he was martyred in that battle. He was wearing a garment that wasn't big enough to cover his whole body, so it was not large enough to shroud him in. When they covered his head his feet would show, and when they covered his feet his head would show. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to cover his head with the garment he was wearing and to cover his feet with a kind of grass called ""Idhkhir"". ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn ‘Awf remembered Mus‘ab at that moment (of breaking his fast) and said: ""They have gone and are safe from (falling into sins regarding) the worldly pleasures that were generously bestowed on those who followed them from the spoils of war, as Allah says: {And much war booty which they will take...} [Sūrat al-Fat'h: 19]. Ibn ‘Awf then said: ""I am afraid that the reward of our good deeds has been hastened to us in this world."" Meaning: We are afraid that we are the ones intended in this Qur'anic verse: {Whoever desires this present life, We hasten to him therein what We please for whomsoever We desire, then We assign to him the Hell fire

As-Sāib ibn Yazīd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Tabūk, the people went out to receive him. I received him with the boys at Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘.” Al-Bukhāri narrated it with the following wording: “We went with the boys to Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘ to receive the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).”

Explanation

Hadīth explanation: As-Sāib ibn Yazīd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the battle of Tabūk, the people – those who had been excused from going and stayed behind and the others - went to Thaniyyat al-Wadā‘ (a place on the outskirts of Madīnah) to greet him on his arrival. As-Sāib ibn Yazīd went out with the boys of Madīnah to receive the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).

Were this world worth a wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, He would not have given the disbeliever a drink of water thereof

Hadith_Text

Sahl ibn Sa‘d As-Sā‘idi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Were this world worth a wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, He would not have given the disbeliever a drink of water thereof.""

Explanation

This Hadīth indicates the insignificance of this worldly life in the sight of Allah, and that it has no value. If it did have any value in Allah's sight, then He wouldn't have allowed a disbeliever to have a sip of water, let alone give him provisions and joyful pleasures. This worldly life is worthless in the sight of Allah, contrary to the Hereafter which is the eternal abode of bliss, prepared for the believers alone, apart from the disbelievers. For this reason, the believers should realize the reality of this worldly life and not attach themselves to it, for it is a passage way and not the permanent residence. They should only take from this worldly life what would benefit them in the Hereafter
