By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will pray to Him but He will not respond to you

Hadith_Text

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""By the One in Whose Hand my soul is! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will pray to Him but He will not respond to you.""

Explanation

The Prophet's saying ""By the One in Whose Hand my soul is"" is an oath in which the Prophet swears by Allah. The souls are in Allah's Hand, Exalted and Glorified. He guides or misguides them, and He causes them to live or die, if He wills. Allah says: {And [by] the soul and He Who proportioned it. And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness.} [SÅ«rat Ash-Shams: 7-8] So the souls are in Allah's hand alone. That is why the Prophet swore by it. He would also swear by his own soul: ""By the One in Whose hand the soul of Muhammad is."" That is because the soul of Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) is the best of souls. Therefore, he would swear by it. The Prophet then mentioned the thing on which he took the oath: to command good and forbid evil, which is a religious duty that is to be fulfilled. Otherwise, Allah will send a common punishment and not answer our prayers.

I came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he was in a red leather tent. Bilāl stepped out with ablution water (that was left over from the Prophet's ablution. There were some people who managed to get some of it (seeking its blessing), whereas others just received a sprinkle of it

Hadith_Text

Abu Juhayfah Wahb ibn ‘Abdullāh As-Suwā'i (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he was in a red leather tent. Bilāl stepped out with ablution water (that was left over from the Prophet's ablution). There were people who managed to get some of it (seeking its blessing), whereas others just received a sprinkle of it. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) came out wearing a red garment. It is as if I am looking right now at the whiteness of his legs. He performed ablution and Bilāl called the Adhān (the call to prayer). I kept watching the movement of his mouth (as he turned) to this side and that side and he said to the right and to the left: ""Come to prayer, come to success!"" Then a spear was fixed for him (in the ground). He stepped forward and performed two Rak‘ahs for the Zhuhr prayer, and he did not stop performing two Rak‘ahs until he returned to Madīnah.

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was in Al-Abtah in upper Makkah. Bilāl came out with the water that was left over from the ablution of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and people were seeking blessing from that water. Then Bilāl called the Adhān. Abu Juhayfah said that he kept watching Bilāl's mouth as he was turning to the right and left saying: “Come to prayer, come to success”, so the people could hear him, as these two sentences are intended to encourage them to come to the prayer. Then a short spear was fixed in the ground for the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to act as a Sutrah for him during his prayer. He performed two Rak‘ahs for the Zhuhr prayer and he continued to shorten the four-Rak‘ah prayers until he returned to Madīnah, because he was a traveler.

A baby boy was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he urinated on the Prophet's clothes. So, he asked for water and sprinkled it over it

Hadith_Text

Umm Qays bint Mihsan al-Asadiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I brought my baby boy, who had not started eating solid food, to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). He took him and sat him on his lap. The baby urinated on the Prophet's garment. So he asked for water and sprinkled it over his garment, but did not wash it. ‘Ā'ishah, the Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: A baby boy was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he urinated on the Prophet's clothes. So, he asked for water and sprinkled it over it. In another narration: ""He sprinkled some of the water on his urine, but did not wash it.”

Explanation

The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to go to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with their children, so that they could receive the Prophet's blessing and ask him to supplicate for them. Out of kindness and noble morals, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to meet them cheerfully and with a smile. Umm Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) came with her son, who was still being breastfed and had not yet reached the age of eating solid food. Out of his mercy, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took the boy and sat him on his lap. The boy urinated on the Prophet's clothes, thereupon, he called for some water. He sprinkled some water on the spot of the urine, but he did not wash it. This ruling is exclusive to the male suckling.

I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt Maymūnah. When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood to perform Prayer at night, I joined him and stood on his left. He, then, took me by the head and made me stand on his right

Hadith_Text

Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt Maymūnah. When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) stood to perform Prayer at night, I joined him and stood on his left. He then took me by the head and made me stand on his right.

Explanation

The great Companion Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that he slept one night in the house of his maternal aunt, who is the Prophet's wife to learn about the Prophet's late-night prayer. When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) got up and stood to pray at night, Ibn ‘Abbās joined him in prayer and stood on the Prophet's left side to follow him in prayer. Since the right side is the most honorable of the two sides and the proper position where the one who prays behind an Imām should stand, in case he is one person, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) took him by the head, turned him from his behind and made him stand on his right.

Fear Allah, pray your five, fast your month, give Zakah from your wealth, and obey your rulers, and you will enter your Lord's Paradise

Hadith_Text

Abu Umāmah Suday ibn ‘Ijlān al-Bāhili (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) give a sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage and that he said: ""Fear Allah, pray your five, fast your month, give Zakah from your wealth, and obey your rulers, and you will enter your Lord's Paradise.""

Explanation

During the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) gave a sermon on the day of ‘Arafat as well as on the Day of Eid al-Ad'ha, admonishing and reminding the people. This sermon is one of the supererogatory sermons. It is recommended for the Hajj leader to deliver it to the people, just as the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did. The following is a summary of what was mentioned in one of the sermons of the Farewell Pilgrimage: ""O people, fear your Lord."" The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered all of mankind to fear their Lord, Who created them, bestowed His favors upon them, and prepared them to accept His messages. ""Pray your five!"" He refers to the five daily prayers that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, made compulsory upon His Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). ""Fast your month!"" He refers to the month of Ramadan. ""Give Zakah from your wealth!"" Give it to whomever is entitled to it, and do not withhold it. ""Obey your rulers!"" Meaning: whoever Allah made a ruler over you, including rulers of districts and countries, as well as the president nowadays. It is obligatory upon the citizens to obey them as long as the order does not constitute disobedience to Allah. It is not permissible to obey them in disobeying Allah, even if they commanded it, because obedience to the creation does not take precedence over obedience to the Creator, Glorified and Exalted

O Mu‘ādh, by Allah! I love you. I advise you, O Mu‘ādh, never fail to say after every prayer: O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in an excellent manner

Hadith_Text

Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""O Mu‘ādh, by Allah! I love you. I advise you, O Mu‘ādh, never fail to say after every prayer: 'O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in an excellent manner.""

Explanation

The Hadīth of Mu‘ādh illustrates a new feature of Islamic love, whose fruits include sincere advice and guidance to all what is good. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mu‘ādh: ""I love you"" and he swore by saying: ""By Allah! I love you"", and this is a tremendous feat for Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) swore that he loved him. A lover bears nothing for his beloved but what is good for him. He told him that so as to make him ready for receiving what he was about to say. ""Never fail to say after every prayer,"" i.e. the obligatory prayers. ""O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in an excellent manner."" After every prayer means at the end of the prayer before ending it with the final Taslīm. This corresponds with some narrations where it was reported that one should say these words before concluding the prayer with Taslīm, and that is correct. As it is already established, if a supplication is reported to be said after the prayer, then what is meant is that it should be said before Taslīm, but if it is a type of Dhikr, then it should be recited after Taslīm. This rule is proven by the Hadīth of Ibn Mas‘ūd, on Tashahhud where the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Then he may choose whatever he wishes or likes, or whatever pleases him of the supplications."" However, when it comes to Dhikr, Allah, Exalted, says (what means): {When you have finished the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting down, and lying down on your sides} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 103] ""Help me remember You"" i.e. guide me to every word that brings one closer to Allah. Everything that brings one closer to Allah is part of remembering Allah. ""Thank you"" i.e. thanking Him for the blessings and for warding off harm, because the blessings which Allah bestows upon His creation are so many, and the harm which He wards off is so much. So one thanks Allah for that.

By Allah! We do not entrust this post to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it

Hadith_Text

Abu Mūsa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I and two of my paternal cousins entered upon the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). One of them said: ""O Messenger of Allah, appoint us rulers over some of what Allah, the Almighty, has entrusted you with."" The other said the same. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""By Allah! We do not entrust this post to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it.’""

Explanation

The Hadīth contains a prohibition of giving authority to whoever seeks it or has greed for it. When the two men asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint them rulers over some of what Allah entrusted him with, he said: ""By Allah! We do not entrust this affair to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it."" i.e. we do not give authority to anyone who asks for it or is keen to have it. That is because perhaps the one who seeks it or has greed for it aims at giving himself authority, not at bringing reform. Since such a person could be liable to such an accusation, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade giving authority to the one who seeks it, saying: ""By Allah! We do not entrust this post to anyone who seeks it or is keen to attain it."" The subject matter of this Hadīth was confirmed by the Hadīth of ‘Abdur-Rahmān ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) who reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Do not ask for a position of authority, for if you are granted this position without having asked for it, you will be helped in it, and if you are granted it as a result of your asking for it, you will be left alone to handle it."" So, it is not befitting for a ruler to fulfill the request of someone who seeks authority over an area of land even if he is qualified for it. Likewise, if someone asks to be appointed a judge, saying for example to the person in charge of judiciary, like the minister of justice, for example: ""Make me a judge over such-and-such land,"" he should not to be given such an authority. As for the case where someone asks to be moved from authority over one land to another, then it is not included in this Hadīth, because he has already been in a position of authority, but is asking to be moved to another location. This applies unless it is known that his intention and aim is to gain authority over the people of that land, in which case, he should be prevented, since actions are to be judged according to intentions. One may wonder about the statement of Yūsuf (peace be upon him) to the ruler: {Set me over the storehouses of the land

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zhuhr prayer at the time of intense heat, and the ‘Asr prayer at the time when the sun was clear, and the Maghrib prayer when its time was due

Hadith_Text

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Ansāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zhuhr prayer at the time of intense heat, and the ‘Asr prayer at the time when the sun was clear, and the Maghrib prayer when its time was due, and as for the ‘Ishā' prayer, he would sometimes hasten to offer it when he saw them already gathered, and at other times he would delay it when they had not gathered yet. As for the Fajr prayer, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer it at the time when darkness at the end of the night mixed with the faint light of the morning.

I gave the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) pledge to establish the prayer, pay Zakah, and advise every Muslim

Hadith_Text

Jarīr ibn Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I gave the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) pledge to establish the prayer, pay Zakah, and advise every Muslim.

Explanation

Jarīr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ""I gave the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) pledge to perform prayer, pay Zakah, and give good advice to every Muslim."" The pledge given here means a covenant. It was called a pledge because both parties extend their hands and hold them together as they do in pledges. These three things represent: 1. An absolute right of Allah. 2. An absolute right of the human being. 3. A common right. The absolute right of Allah is “to establish prayer”, which means performing the prayer in the manner required by offering it in its due time, fulfilling all of its pillars, obligations, and conditions, and perfecting it with its recommended acts. Establishment of prayer for men requires performing it in the mosque with the congregation. It is also required that prayer is offered with an attentive heart and heedful mind that understands what is being said and done. This is, in fact, very important because it is the locus and soul of the prayer. The absolute right of humans is to “pay Zakah”, which means giving Zakah to its proper recipients who deserve it. The common right is to ""advise every Muslim"". This includes the Muslim who is relative or non-relative, old or young, and male or female. The way in which a person should give advice to every Muslim is demonstrated in the Hadīth reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) which reads: ""None of you becomes a true believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."" This is the essence of advice. In other words, a Muslim should love for his brothers what he loves for himself to the extent that what pleases them makes him pleased and what saddens them makes him sad. One should also treat others in the way he wishes to be treated. Indeed, there are many examples falls under this category.
