""Ruined are the extremists!"" He said it thrice

Hadith_Text

Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Ruined are the extremists!."" He said it thrice.

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) points out that delving deeply into certain matters and exceeding their proper bounds cause man's ruin. That is why he has forbidden this attitude. An example of that is when a man burdens himself with enormous acts of worship till he becomes averse to the worship and gives it up altogether. Another example is pretension in speech and using pompous words. The gravest type of extremism and the worthiest of being warned against is exceeding the proper bounds in venerating the righteous people in a way that leads to polytheism.

Benefits

It urges avoidance of immoderation in everything, particularly in observing acts of worship and reverence of pious people. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was keen on securing the salvation of his Ummah and exerted diligent efforts in conveying the message. Immoderation is prohibited in all matters. It is recommended to stress important things. People are urged to adopt moderation in everything. Islam is a religion of tolerance and ease.

"Title

Whoever meets Allah without associating partners with Him will enter Paradise, and whoever meets Him while associating partners with Him will enter Hell

Hadith_Text

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""Whoever meets Allah without associating partners with Him will enter Paradise, and whoever meets Him while associating partners with Him will enter Hell.""

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that the one who dies without having associated others with Allah, in terms of his lordship, worship, or his names and attributes, will enter Paradise. But the one who dies while having associated others with Him will enter Hellfire.

Benefits

Whoever dies as a believer will not dwell in Hellfire forever and will ultimately enter Paradise. Whoever dies as a polytheist will deservedly enter Hellfire. Paradise and Hellfire are near to people, and nothing stands between them and Paradise or Hellfire but death. We are required to fear from polytheism, for salvation from Hellfire is conditional upon being unblemished by polytheism. It is not the plenty of deeds that matters but rather being unblemished by polytheism does. It explains the meaning of ""there is no god worthy of worship but Allah"", namely to refrain from polytheism and devote worship to Allah Almighty alone. It points out the merit of being free from polytheism. It establishes the existence of Paradise and Hellfire. The deeds that matter are the final ones.

Whoever is prevented from doing something because of his belief in bad omens has thus committed polytheism. They said: What is the expiation of that? He said: It is to say: ""O Allah, there is no good except Your good, nor omen except Your omen, and there is no god but You

Hadith_Text

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever is prevented from doing something because of his belief in bad omens has thus committed polytheism. They said: What is the expiation of that? He said: It is to say: ""O Allah, there is no good except Your good, nor omen except Your omen, and there is no god but You.’”

Explanation

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) informs us that whoever refrains from doing anything that he had intended to do out of belief in bad omens, has in some sense committed polytheism. When the Companions asked him about the expiation of this major sin, he instructed them to say those noble words mentioned in the Hadīth. This homily indicates entrusting all affairs to Allah and negating omnipotence from anyone other than Him.

Benefits

It establishes the polytheism of a person who is deterred by an evil omen from pursuing his course of action. The repentance of a polytheist is accepted. It guides to what a person should say if he is influenced by evil omens. Good and evil are predestined by Allah Almighty.

Who is that who swears that I will not forgive so-and-so? Indeed, I have forgiven him and rendered worthless your deeds

Hadith_Text

Jundub ibn ‘Abdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: ""A man said: 'By Allah, Allah will not forgive so-and-so.' Thereupon, Allah said: 'Who is that who swears that I will not forgive so-and-so? Indeed, I have forgiven him and rendered worthless your deeds.'"" In a similar Hadīth reported by Abu Hurayrah: ''The sayer was a worshiper.'' Abu Hurayrah said: ''He said a word that ruined his life and Hereafter.’'

Explanation

Warning against the dangers of the tongue, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) says that a man once swore that Allah would not forgive a sinner. It was as if he was passing a judgment that limits Allah's authority, believing in his credit and the sinner's disgrace. His conceit implies his rudeness toward Allah, a practice that subjected him to a miserable fate in life and the Hereafter.
