After death, most Muslims believe that the soul will enter Barzakh, a state of waiting, until the Day of Judgement. When a person dies, their soul is taken by Azra'il, the Angel of Death. God sends two angels to question the waiting soul.

WHAT DO MUSLIMS BELIEVE ABOUT THE AFTERLIFE? “AKHIRAH MEANING”

The Akhirah meaning plays a significant role in shaping the life of a Muslim and his beliefs. In Islam. Muslims believe that the Dunya (this world) is nothing but a test with all its ups and downs. This is what encourages them to be patient and welcome any new challenges, hardships, and obstacles with open arms. Knowing that it won’t last and that they will be rewarded greatly for their patience and having faith in Allah.

What is the Akhirah in Islam and why do Muslims strive to win it? let’s find out.

Akhirah meaning in Islam.

Akhirah meaning in English is the Afterlife or the hereafter.  In Arabic, it is called Al-Akhirah الآخرة to refer to the life that comes after death, which is known in Islam as the everlasting life. Muslims believe that this life is only a test and the one who passes it wins the afterlife and will enter paradise, but the one who fails the test will be punished and will enter hell.

Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“Indeed, We have created humankind in constant struggle.” [surah Al-Balad, 4]

Allah says in the Quran that this life is a test for the believers, and the test is filled with struggles and challenges. Therefore, Muslims believe that all the challenges they face and the hardships they go through in this life is a test of their belief and faith in Allah. knowing that Allah will not put us through something that we can’t bear or that is over our limits. Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

Allah does not require of any soul more than what it can afford. All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be to its own loss.” [surah Al-Baqarah, 286]

That is why Muslims believe that any hardship they go through will come to an end. All we have to do is to be patient, have strong faith in Allah, ask for his help and we will overcome any hardship we go through.

The Akhirah meaning also includes the resurrection and the day of judgment. Knowing that we will be held accountable for our actions whether good or bad encourages us to try our best in doing what is only good. On the day of judgment, Allah will resurrect all humans and everything that we ever did in our lives however small it is will be recorded and we will be rewarded or punished according to our deeds.  The ones who did good in their lives, and their good deeds are more than their bad deeds will be rewarded with heaven, and the ones who did bad deeds and their bad deeds exceed their good will be punished and will go to hell.

To enter Jannah a Muslim should live his life according to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Allah is the most merciful and forgiving, whenever a person does something wrong or commits a sin he should return to Allah, repent to him, and ask for his forgiveness.

How Does Akhirah Meaning Differ from Dunya (This World)?

Akhirah meaning in Islam refers to the life that comes after death, it is the eternal life. While Al-Dunya refers to this world we are living in now. In Al-Akhirah one will be held accountable for their deeds whether good or bad. And based on the deeds a person will either enter Paradise or hell.

1. Al-Dunya (The Nearer Life).

The Dunya is mentioned in the holy Quran to refer to the life on earth that we are living now. Allah warns us from following life’s pleasures and being distracted by their beauty and tempting pleasures. Instead of following our desires Muslims believe that this life is only a test, and whatever they do in this life they will be held accountable for it. understanding the difference between Dunya and Akhirah meaning helps Muslims stay on the right path. Because this life is nothing but a test and it won’t last forever, unlike the Akhirah which refers to eternal life.

Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“This worldly life is no more than play and amusement, but far better is the ˹eternal˺ Home of the Hereafter for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. Will you not then understand?” (Surah al-Anʿam, 6:32).

Allah describes the Dunya in the Quran as a play, which is not lasting unlike the Akhirah meaning that refers to the eternal life. In the afterlife, this life will seem like it was only a day or a couple of days. Allah says in the holy Quran:

He will ask ˹them˺, “How many years did you remain on earth?” They will reply, “We remained ˹only˺ a day or part of a day. But ask those who kept count.” He will say, “You only remained for a little while, if only you knew. Did you then think that We had created you without purpose and that you would never be returned to Us?”  (Surah al-Mu’minun, 23:112-115).

Life is only a test; it is filled with illusion and deception to test the believers. People tend to follow their desires and chase it with everything they have forgetting that this life will not last, and straying from the real purpose and goal.

“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Surah Al ʿImran, 3:185).

Knowing the Akhirah meaning helps us stay on the right path. We shouldn’t forget our true goal of this life, which is doing our best to please Allah and do what is good. Instead of chasing our desires and regretting them in the afterlife.

“And leave those who take this faith of Islam as mere play and amusement and are deluded by their worldly life. Yet remind them by this ˹Quran˺, so no one should be ruined for their misdeeds. They will have no protector or intercessor other than Allah. Even if they were to offer every possible ransom, none will be accepted from them. Those are the ones who will be ruined for their misdeeds. They will have a boiling drink and painful punishment for their disbelief.” (Surah al-Anʿam, 6:70).

Neither wealth, power, or children will come to rescue us in the Akhirah, only our good deeds will.

“Wealth and children are the adornment of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope.” (Qur’an, Surah al-Kahf, 18:46).

Nothing in this life lasts forever, and when knowing the Akhirah meaning you will be aware of that. No matter how much power you have, your wealth, position, family, or anything you have in this life can change in a second. Nothing lasts forever in the Dunya, we are not in control of it, it is all in the hands of Allah.

The life of this world is just like rain We send down from the sky, producing a mixture of plants which humans and animals consume. Then just as the earth looks its best, perfectly beautified, and its people think they have full control over it, there comes to it Our command by night or by day, so We mow it down as if it never flourished yesterday! This is how We make the signs clear for people who reflect. (Qur’an, Surah Yunus, 10:24).

Everything that we have in this life is from Allah, and we should know that instead of being arrogant.

“We let you know this so that you neither grieve over what you have missed nor boast over what He has granted you. For Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful” (Qur’an, Surah al-Hadid, 57:23).

2. Al Akhirah (The After Life).

The Akhirah meaning in Islam is the eternal life, of the life that comes after death. It is what we should all focus on instead of being distracted by this life’s pleasures. We should focus on doing good deeds and pleasing Allah.

“And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter – that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.” (Qur’an, Surah al-ʿAnkabut, 29:64).

Dunya represents our actions and deeds, while akhirah represents the results of our actions. They are both linked, and we will be rewarded or punished based on what we did in our Dunya. The Akhirah meaning is something beyond our imaginations.

They ˹only˺ know the worldly affairs of this life but are ˹totally˺ oblivious to the Hereafter. (Qur’an, Surah al-Rum, 30:7).

“O  my people! This worldly life is only a fleeting˺ enjoyment, whereas the Hereafter is truly the home of settlement.” (Qur’an, Surah al-Ghafir, 40:39).

Dunia and Akhirah meaning in Quran.

Here are some Quranic verses about Dunya and Akhirah meaning:

The life of this world is just like rain We send down from the sky, producing a mixture of plants which humans and animals consume. Then just as the earth looks its best, perfectly beautified, and its people think they have full control over it, there comes to it Our command by night or by day, so We mow it down as if it never flourished yesterday! This is how We make the signs clear for people who reflect. [Surah 10:24]

Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children. This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff. And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of Allah, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment. [Surah 57:20]

Other Quranic verses about the Akhirah meaning in Islam:

Rather, seek the ˹reward˺ of the Hereafter by means of what Allah has granted you, without forgetting your share of this world. And be good to others as Allah has been good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for Allah certainly does not like the corruptors.” [Surah 28:77]

But you ˹deniers only˺ prefer the life of this world, even though the Hereafter is far better and more lasting. [Quran 87:16-17]

When you have fulfilled your sacred rites, praise Allah as you used to praise your forefathers before Islam˺, or even more passionately. There are some who say, “Our Lord! Grant us your bounties˺ in this world,” but they will have no share in the Hereafter.

Yet there are others who say, “Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.” [Quran 2:200-201]

Allah gives abundant or limited provisions to whoever He wills. And the disbelievers become prideful of the pleasures of this worldly life. But the life of this world, compared to the Hereafter, is nothing but a fleeting enjoyment. [Surah Ra’d, 26]

“Every soul will taste death. And you will only receive your full reward on the Day of Judgment. Whoever is spared from the Fire and is admitted into Paradise will ˹indeed˺ triumph, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.”

Verses about the Akhirah meaning:

Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children. This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff. And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of Allah, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment. [surah Hadid, 20]

This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But the Hereafter is indeed the real life, if only they knew. [Surah Al-‘Ankabut, 64]

Rather, seek the ˹reward˺ of the Hereafter by means of what Allah has granted you, without forgetting your share of this world. And be good ˹to others˺ as Allah has been good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for Allah certainly does not like the corruptors.” [surah Al-Qasas, 77]

They are˺ the ones who favor the life of this world over the Hereafter and hinder others from the Way of Allah, striving to make it appear crooked. It is they who have gone far astray. [surah Ibrahim, 3]

What are the Beliefs and Concepts Associated with Akhirah in Islam?

Among the beliefs and concepts regarding Akhirah meaning in Islam is resurrection, the day of judgment, the book of deeds, Sirat, hell, and paradise.

Resurrection (al-Qiyamah).

On that day, all humans will be resurrected and gathered to be judged for their deeds.

Allah, there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He will certainly gather all of you together on the Day of Judgment—about which there is no doubt. And whose word is more truthful than Allah’s? (Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa’, 4:87).

On this day everyone will be in a state of fear:

When the sun is folded up (and darkened); and when the stars fall (losing their luster); and when the mountains are set moving; and when (highly prized) pregnant camels are left untended; and when the wild beasts (as also the domesticated ones) go forth from their places of rest (in terror of the destruction of the world, and then, following their revival, are gathered together before God, for the settlement of their accounts); and when the seas rise up boiling; and when the souls are coupled (the righteous men with pure, righteous spouses, and the evil ones with their evil spouses and with devilish companions); and when the female infant, buried alive, is questioned, for what crime she was killed; and when the scrolls (of the deeds of every person) are laid open; and when the heaven is torn away (with all the truths becoming manifest); and when the blazing flame is kindled (to fierce heat); and when paradise is brought near (for the God-revering, pious to enter); every person will (then) come to know what he has prepared (for himself). (Qur’an, Surah al-Takwir, 81:1-14).

The reckoning is one of the Akhirah meanings in Islam, on that day every person will only care about himself.

But when the piercing cry (heralding the resurrection) sounds; On that Day when a person flees from his brother, and from his mother and father, and from his spouse and his children; everyone on that Day has concern of his own enough to make him heedless (of anything else). (Qur’an, Surah al-ʿAbasa, 80:33-37).

We will be judged for our actions no matter how small it is, all our deeds are recorded.

So God will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection. (Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa’, 4:141).

There is no escape from our deeds, and whoever did bad deeds will regret what he did and wish he could come back to life and fix what he did wrong.

And warn them about the day of intense regret, when the matter shall have been decided; and they are (now) in negligence and they do not believe. (Qur’an, Surah Maryam, 19:39).

However, on that day there is no turning back, all the wealth, power, family, nothing will intercede for the person except his deeds in the Dunya.

˹although˺ they will be made to see each other. The wicked will wish to ransom themselves from the punishment of that Day by their children, their spouses, their siblings, their clan that sheltered them, and everyone on earth altogether, just to save themselves. (Qur’an, Surah al-Maʿarij, 70:11-14)

2. The Book of Deeds.

Another thing included in the Akhirah meaning is the book of deeds. The Book of deeds is a book where all our good and bad deeds are recorded.

O believers! Be mindful of Allah and let every soul look to what ˹deeds˺ it has sent forth for tomorrow.1 And fear Allah, ˹for˺ certainly Allah is All-Aware of what you do. [Qur’an, Surah al-Hadid, 57:18).

And the record ˹of deeds˺ will be laid ˹open˺, and you will see the wicked in fear of what is ˹written˺ in it. They will cry, “Woe to us! What kind of record is this that does not leave any sin, small or large, unlisted?” They will find whatever they did present before them. And your Lord will never wrong anyone. (Qur’an, Surah al-Kahf, 18:49).

The Akhirah meaning includes the day of judgment, on that day the one who did bad deeds will wish to turn to dust.

Indeed, We have warned you of an imminent punishment—the Day every person will see ˹the consequences of˺ what their hands have done, and the disbelievers will cry, “I wish I were dust.” (Qur’an, Surah al-Naba’, 78:40).

3. Paradise (al-Jannah)

Another part of Akhirah meaning is paradise. Jannah is the reward of the believer. It’s a place that is beyond our imaginations where believers will live in comfort and get everything they wish for.

Whereas it is said to those who keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety: What is it that your Lord sends down (on the Messenger)? They answer: That which is purely good and to our benefit (in both worlds). For those devoted to doing good in this world, aware that God is seeing them, there is good, and the abode of the Hereafter is indeed better. How excellent indeed, is the abode of the God-revering, pious! Gardens of perpetual bliss which they will enter, through which rivers flow. Therein they will have whatever they may desire. Thus does God reward the God-revering, pious – Those whose souls the angels take while they are in a pious state (free of evil, and worshipping none but God alone), saying: Peace be upon you! Enter Paradise for what you have been doing. (Qur’an, Surah al-Nahl, 16:30-32).

(They will be seated) on lined thrones (encrusted with gold and precious stones), reclining upon them, facing one another. There will go round them immortal youths, with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a clear-flowing spring, from which no aching of the head ensues, nor intoxication of the mind; and with fruits such as they choose, and with the flesh of fowls such as they desire; and (there will be) pure maidens, most beautiful of eye, like pearls kept hidden (in their shells). A reward for all (the good) that they used to do. They will hear there neither vain talk nor accusing speech; (they will hear) only speech (wishing) peace and security after peace and security. (Qur’an, Surah al-Waqiʿah, 56:15-26).

The Akhirah meaning of heaven is a great reward for the believers.

God has promised the believers, both men and women, Gardens through which rivers flow, therein to abide, and blessed dwellings in Gardens of perpetual bliss; and greater (than those) is God’s being pleased with them. That indeed is the supreme triumph. (Qur’an, Surah al-Tawbah, 9:72).

And the God-revering, pious ones will be in Gardens and by rivers; In the assembly of honor composed of the loyal and truthful in the Presence of the One All-Omnipotent Sovereign. (Qur’an, Surah al-Qamar, 54:54-55).

4. Hell (al-Jahannam)

Among the Akhirah meaning is the Hell where the ones who do bad deeds will be punished for their actions.

(As for) those who consume the property of the orphans unjustly, surely they only swallow fire into their stomaches and they shall enter burning fire. (Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa’, 4:10).

Everyone will be rewarded for his actions whether good or bad:

So then, however, has done an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil will see it. (Qur’an, Surah al-Zilzal, 99:7-8).

What Role Does Akhirah Play in Shaping Muslim Beliefs and Practices?

The day of judgment and the resurrection are also included in the Akhirah meaning. Knowing that we will be held responsible for all of our actions—good or bad—encourages us to put out our best effort in carrying out only good deeds. All people will be rewarded of punished for their good or bad deeds by Allah on the Day of Judgment. All of our past actions, no matter how insignificant, will be noted and we will be rewarded or punished based on our deeds.  Those who lived good lives and did more good deeds than bad will be rewarded with heaven; those who lived bad lives and did more bad deeds than good will be punished and sent to hell.

A Muslim must live his life in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah’s teachings in order to enter Jannah. Since Allah is the most merciful and forgiving, anyone who has sinned should turn to him, repent, and beg for forgiveness.

How is Akhirah Described in Islamic Scriptures and Traditions?

Here are Quranic verses that describe the Akhirah meaning:

So God will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection. (Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa’, 4:141).

˹although˺ they will be made to see each other. The wicked will wish to ransom themselves from the punishment of that Day by their children, their spouses, their siblings, their clan that sheltered them, and everyone on earth altogether, just to save themselves. (Qur’an, Surah al-Maʿarij, 70:11-14).

Other verses about the Akhirah meaning:

O believers! Be mindful of Allah and let every soul look to what ˹deeds˺ it has sent forth for tomorrow.1 And fear Allah, ˹for˺ certainly Allah is All-Aware of what you do. [Qur’an, Surah al-Hadid, 57:18).

And the record ˹of deeds˺ will be laid ˹open˺, and you will see the wicked in fear of what is ˹written˺ in it. They will cry, “Woe to us! What kind of record is this that does not leave any sin, small or large, unlisted?” They will find whatever they did present ˹before them˺. And your Lord will never wrong anyone. (Qur’an, Surah al-Kahf, 18:49).

Indeed, We have warned you of an imminent punishment—the Day every person will see ˹the consequences of˺ what their hands have done, and the disbelievers will cry, “I wish I were dust.” (Qur’an, Surah al-Naba’, 78:40).

And the God-revering, pious ones will be in Gardens and by rivers; In the assembly of honor composed of the loyal and truthful in the Presence of the One All-Omnipotent Sovereign. (Qur’an, Surah al-Qamar, 54:54-55).

So then, however has done an atom’s weight of good will see it; and whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil will see it. (Qur’an, Surah al-Zilzal, 99:7-8).

“And they say, ‘There is not but our worldly life; we die and live and nothing destroys us except time.’ And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming. And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, ‘Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful.’ Say, ‘God causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt,’ but most of the people do not know.” [Quran 45:24-26]

Here are other Quranic verses about akhirah in Islam:

“When death comes to one of them, he says, ‘My Lord, send me back! So that I can do good in the things I neglected.’ By no means! It is a mere word that he speaks.” [Quran, 23:99-100]

“Then when the Horn is blown with one blast, and the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow. Then on that Day, the Occurrence [a mass resurrection] will occur, And the heaven will split, for that Day it is infirm. And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight. That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgment by Allah]; not hidden among you is anything concealed. So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, “Here, read my record! Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account.” So he will be in a pleasant life – In an elevated Garden, Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near. [They will be told], “Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth (literally, advanced in anticipation of reward in the Hereafter) in the days past.” But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, “Oh, I wish I had not been given my record and had not known what is my account. I wish it [my demise] had been the decisive one (with no afterlife to consider or experience). My wealth has not availed me. Gone from me is my authority.” [Allah will say to him], “Seize him and shackle him. Then into Hellfire drive him. Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him.” Indeed, he did not used to believe in God, the Most Great.” [Quran, 69:13-33]

What are the Rewards and Punishments of Akhirah According to Islamic Teachings?

 Allah says:

[31:33]

“O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his son, nor will a son avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.”

According to the Akhirah meaning, the rewards of the believers will be beyond our imaginations. Allah says in the holy Quran:

The punishment for the people who do bad deeds is terrifying, Allah says in the holy Quran:

“So as to those who are unhappy, they shall be in the fire; for them shall be sighing and groaning in it: Abiding therein so long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord please; surely your Lord is the mighty doer of what He intends. And as to those who are made happy, they shall be in the garden, abiding in it as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord please; a gift which shall never be cut off.” (Surah Hud 11:106-108)

“And whoever turns away from My reminder, he shall be a straitened life, and We will raise him on the day of resurrection, blind.” (Surah Taha 20:124)

How Does the Belief in Akhirah Influence Muslim Ethics and Morality?

Muslims believe that this life is merely a test, and that those who pass it will be rewarded with a place in paradise in the afterlife, while those who fail will face punishment in hell.

The Quran states that believers are put to the test in this life, which is full of hardships and difficulties. Muslims therefore hold that every difficulty and test they encounter in this life serves as a demonstration of their faith and confidence in Allah. being aware that Allah won’t subject us to suffering that is beyond our capabilities or what we can handle.

For this reason, Muslims think that all of their suffering will eventually end. All we need to do to get through any difficult situation is to be patient, have a firm trust in Allah, and ask for his assistance.

What are the Importance and Significance of Believing in Akhirah?

Believing in Akhirah changes the person’s perspective of life. Instead of following the life desires you will seek to enter Jannah and do what is good. Knowing that no wealth or power can save you from the punishment of the afterlife.

How Can Belief in Akhirah Provide Comfort and Perspective in Life’s Challenges?

Believing and understanding the Akhirah meaning opens your eyes to the true purpose of life. You will come to understand that this life (Dunya) is only a test and you will be rewarded for being patient and having faith in Allah. so, when you are faced with challenges and go through hardships you will stay patient and ask for Allah’s help to overcome it.

How Can One Prepare for Akhirah and Lead a Life in Accordance with Islamic teachings?

To prepare yourself for the Akhirah you should learn about the Akhirah meaning, and try your best to live your life in accordance to the Quran and Sunnah’s teachings in order to enter Jannah. And even if you make a mistake or a sin repent to Allah and ask for his forgiveness, Allah is the most merciful and forgiving, and he will forgive you.
