Jannah is described with physical pleasures such as gardens, beautiful houris, wine that has no aftereffects, and "divine pleasure". Their reward of pleasure will vary according to the righteousness of the person. The characteristics of Jannah often have direct parallels with t

Heaven in Islam is known as the great reward of believers for all their hard work, striving to please Allah, and choosing the afterlife over this life.

Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“Give good news ˹O Prophet˺ to those who believe and do good that they will have Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever provided with fruit, they will say, “This is what we were given before,” for they will be served fruit that looks similar but tastes different˺. They will have pure spouses, and they will be there forever.” (Quran 2:25).

Heaven is what all the believers strive to reach, but why? What does heaven look like? We know about heaven what Allah mentioned in the holy Quran, so let’s learn how Allah described Jannah in Quran.

Names of heaven in Islam.

Jannah in Islam is the greatest reward of a Believer in the afterlife, it is known as Jannah, Paradise, heaven, and Garden of Eden. It is a place for the believers who strived to please Allah and tried to stay on the right path, and when committing a sin or mistake they would turn to Allah and ask for his forgiveness.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

“And hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those mindful of Allah˺.” (Surah Imran, 133)

Heaven in Islam is said to be divided into 8 levels and they are Sayyidunā Ibn ʿAbbās رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ reports that there are eight levels of Paradise: Dār al-Jalāl, Dār al-Qarār, Dār al-Salām, Jannat ʿAdn, Jannat al-Maʾwā, Jannat al-Khuld, Jannat al-Firdaws, and Jannat al-Naʿīm.

Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“See how We have favored some over others in this life, but the Hereafter is certainly far greater in rank and in favor.” [al-Isra 17:21]

“They will each be assigned ranks according to their deeds. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.” [al-An’am 6:132].

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Paradise is of different levels, that vary greatly, and the pious, believing friends of Allah will be in those different levels according to the level of their faith and piety.” (Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, 11/188. Jannah’s description in Quran.

What is the description of heaven in the Quran? Allah Almighty mentioned paradise and its description more than once in the holy Quran. it is the reward of every believer who strives to please Allah and do what is good.

Allah Almighty says in the Quran:

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Shall I inform you of what is better than all of this? Those mindful of Allah˺ will have Gardens with their Lord under which rivers flow, to stay there forever, and pure spouses, along with Allah’s pleasure.” And Allah is All-Seeing of His servants”(3:15).

“Allah will declare, “This is the Day when ˹only˺ the faithful will benefit from their faithfulness. Theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever and ever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is the ultimate triumph.” (5:119).

All will reward the believers for having faith in him and striving to please him.

1. All the negative emotions will be removed.

When the believer enters Jannah in Islam they will be greeted by the angels, and all the negative emotions such as hate, anger, and envy will be removed from the believer’s heart.

Allah says in the holy Quran:

” The Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, ˹saying,˺ “Peace be upon you for your perseverance. How excellent is the ultimate abode!” (Quran 13:23–24).

” And We will have removed whatever is within their breasts of resentment,1 [while] flowing beneath them are rivers. And they will say, “Praise to Allāh, who has guided us to this; and we would never have been guided if Allāh had not guided us. Certainly, the messengers of our Lord had come with the truth.” And they will be called, “This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do.”” (Quran 7:43).

“There they will never hear any idle or sinful talk— only good and virtuous speech.” (Quran 56:25–26).

2. The beautiful gardens.

Paradise in Islam is mentioned in the holy Quran as beautiful gardens filled with everything that the eye has never seen. Therefore, heaven in Islam was called Jannah, which means ‘gardens’.

Allah Almighty said in the holy Quran:

“Give good news ˹O Prophet˺ to those who believe and do good that they will have Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever provided with fruit, they will say, “This is what we were given before,” for they will be served fruit that looks similar ˹but tastes different˺. They will have pure spouses, and they will be there forever.” (2:25).

“And hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those mindful ˹of Allah˺.” (3:133)

“Allah has promised the believers, both men and women, Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever, and splendid homes in the Gardens of Eternity, and—above all—the pleasure of Allah. That is truly the ultimate triumph.” (9:72).

3. The believers will be united with their loved ones.

In heaven in Islam Allah will reunite the believers with their loved ones and friends.

“ And their Lord responded to them, “Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed – I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allāh, and Allāh has with Him the best reward.” (3:195).

“the Gardens of Eternity, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, saying,˺” (Quran 13 23)

“Peace be upon you for your perseverance. How excellent is the ultimate abode!” (Quran 13 24)

4. Be in the company of prophets

” And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be in the company of those blessed by Allah: the prophets, the people of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous—what honorable company!” (Quran 4:69).

5. Heaven in Islam is filled with what the eyes have never seen!

Another thing known about heaven in Islam is that the believers will live in comfort, and shall have what they wish for.

“They will be reclining on thrones, ˹neatly˺ lined up ˹facing each other˺. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.” (52:20).

They and their spouses will be in ˹cool˺ shade, reclining on ˹canopied˺ couches.

“There they will have fruits and whatever they desire.” (36:56–57).

in an elevated Garden,

where no idle talk will be heard.

In it will be a running spring,

along with thrones raised high,

and cups set at hand,

and ˹fine˺ cushions lined up,

and ˹splendid˺ carpets spread out.” (Quran 88:10–16).

6. Any food the believer shall wish for he will get.

Among the descriptions of heaven in Islam is that there will be all the food and drinks that one shall wish for.

We are your supporters in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for:

“an accommodation from the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful ˹Lord˺.” (Quran 41:31–32).

“They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink joyfully for what you did in the days gone by.” (Quran 69:24).

“The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never changes in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will also have all kinds of fruit and forgiveness from their Lord. Can they be like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides? “ (Quran 47:15).

7. Eternal life.

Among the descriptions of heaven in Islam is that it is the eternal place of the believers. Allah Almighty says:

“And those who believe and do good will be the residents of Paradise. They will be there forever.” (Quran 2:82).

“Their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens under which rivers flow, staying there forever. How excellent is the reward for those who work ˹righteousness˺!” (Quran 3:136).

People of Paradise in Islam.

One thing known about heaven in Islam is that it is of different levels, and the believers will be admitted to based on their acts of worship. This in turn means that the bliss of paradise differs from one level to another.

Allah almighty said in the holy Quran:

And whoever is in awe of standing before their Lord will have two Gardens.

Then which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny?

“Both will be with lush branches.” [Ar-Rahman 55:46-48].

Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The people of Paradise will see the people of the highest places in Paradise above them as you see a brilliant star far away on the horizon in the east or the west, because of the difference in status between them.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, is that the status of the Prophets that no one else will attain? He said: “No, by the One in Whose Hand is my soul. They are men who believed in Allah and believed in the messengers.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3083) and Muslim, 2831)

According to another report, “The people of the highest degrees of Paradise will be seen by those beneath them as a star is seen on the horizon. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar will be among them, and how blessed they are!” (Narrated and classed as hasan by at-Tirmidhi (3658). Also narrated by Ibn Majah (96), from the hadith of Abu Sa‘id. Classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih at-Tirmidhi.)

Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It should be understood that these high places will vary in elevation and description, in accordance with the differences between their occupants in terms of righteous deeds. So some of them will be higher than others, and more elevated. With regard to the phrase “a brilliant star far away on the horizon in the east or the west”, what is meant is that the star, when it is rising or setting, is far from people’s vision, so it appears small because it is so far away.” (At-Tadhkirah fi Ahwal al-Mawta wa’d-Dar al-Akhirah, p. 398)

Hadith about Jannah.

Here is what our beloved prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about heaven in Islam:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, “I have prepared for My righteous slaves (such excellent things) as no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard nor a human heart can ever think of.’ ” [Sahih al-Bukhari 7498, Book 97, Hadith 123]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The first group (of people) to enter Jannah will be shining like the moon on a full-moon night. Then will come those who follow them who will be like the most shining planet in the sky. They will not stand in need of urinating or relieving of nature or of spitting or blowing their noses. Their combs will be of gold and their sweat will smell like musk; in their censers, the aloes wood will be used. Their wives will be large-eyed maidens. All men will be alike in the form of their father ‘Adam, sixty cubits tall.”

Another narration is: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Their utensils will be of gold, their perspiration will smell like musk; every one of them will have two wives; the marrow of the bones of the wives’ legs will be seen through the flesh out of excessive beauty. They (i.e., the people of Jannah) will neither have difference, nor enmity (hatred) amongst themselves; their hearts will be as if one heart, and they will be glorifying Allah in the morning and in the afternoon.”[Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1882, Book 19, Hadith 14 ].

Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Musa (Moses) (ﷺ) asked his Rubb: ‘Who amongst the inhabitants of Jannah will be the lowest in rank?’ He said: ‘It will be a person who will be admitted into Jannah last of all when all the dwellers of Jannah have entered Jannah. It will be said to him: Enter Jannah. But he will say: O my Rubb! How should I enter while the people have settled in their apartments and taken their shares? It will be said to him: Will you be satisfied and pleased if you have a kingdom like that of a monarch of the world? He will say: I will be content, my Rubb. Allah will say: For you is that, and like that and like that and like that and like that. He will say at the fifth time: I am well-pleased, my Rubb. Allah will say: It is for you and ten times more like it. You will have whatever your soul desires and whatever your eyes could delight in. He will say: I am well-pleased, my Rubb.’ Musa (ﷺ) said: ‘Who will be of the highest rank in Jannah.’ Allah said: ‘They are those whom I chose and I established their honor with My Own Hand. I attest with My Seal that they will be blessed with such bounties as no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human mind has perceived.”‘ [Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1883, Book 19, Hadith 15].

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever said “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a barley grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a wheat grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said, “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of an atom will be taken out of Hell.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 44, Book 2, Hadith 37]

Abu Bakr b. Abdullah b. Qais reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “In Paradise, there would be for a believer a tent of a single hollowed pearl the breadth of which would be sixty miles. It would be meant for a believer and the believers would go around it and none would be able to see the others.” [Sahih Muslim 2838a, Book 53, Hadith 27]

The prophet also said about heaven in Islam:

Sahl b. Saad reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “In Paradise, there is a tree under the shadow of which a rider can travel for a hundred years without covering (the distance) completely. This hadith has also been transmitted on the authority of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri that Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) is reported to have said: In Paradise, there is a tree under the shadow of which a rider of a fine and swift-footed horse would travel for a hundred years without covering the distance completely. There would be the pleasure of Allah for the inmates of Paradise and He would never be annoyed with them.” [Sahih Muslim 2827, 2828]

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The dwellers of Jannah will look at those in the upper abodes above them as you look at a shining star which remains in the eastern or western horizon; such will be the difference in superiority which some of them have over others.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: “Will those be the dwellings of the Prophets which no one else will be able to reach?” He (ﷺ) replied, “Yes, but by Him in Whose Hand my soul is! men who believed in Allah and acknowledged the truthfulness of the Messengers will reach them.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1887].

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A space in Jannah equal to the distance between the middle and the end of a bow will be better than all that upon which the sun rises and sets.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1888]

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The inhabitants of Jannah will eat and drink therein, but they will not have to pass excrement, to blow their noses or to urinate. Their food will be digested producing belch which will give out a smell like that of musk. They will be inspired to declare the freedom of Allah from imperfection and proclaim His Greatness as easily as you breathe.” [Riyad as-Salihin 1880, Book 19, Hadith 12]

Sahl bin Sa’d (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

I was in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ). He gave a description of Jannah and concluded with these words, “There will be bounties which no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no human heart has ever perceived.” He (ﷺ) then recited this Verse: “Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Rubb in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allah’s Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them. No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy…” (32:16,17)” [Al-Bukhari]

Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives a pair of anything for the sake of Allah will be called from the gate of Paradise: ‘O slave of Allah, this is good.’ Whoever was one of the people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer. Whoever was one of the people of jihad will be called from the gate of jihad. Whoever was one of the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyaan. Whoever was one of the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity.” Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. There is no need for anyone to be called from all of these gates, but will anyone be called from all of them? He said: “Yes, and I hope that you will be one of them.” [Al-Bukhaari (1897) and Muslim (1027) narrated from Abu Hurayrah]

Quranic verses about Jannah.

Here are some verses of the holy Quran regarding the description of heaven in Islam:

“Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying], ‘Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured. And excellent is the final home.’” (Surah Ar-Ra’d verse 23-24)

And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith – We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained. (Surah Tur verse 21)

They and their spouses – in shade, reclining on adorned couches. For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request [or wish] [And] “Peace,” a word from a Merciful Lord. (Surah Ya-Sin 56-58)

“Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allah will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allah. (Surah Imran verse 15)

“And they will say, ‘Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative” (Surah Fatir verse 34)

There will circulate among them young boys made eternal With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring – No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated – And the fruit of what they select And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire. (Surah Waqiah 17-21)

He who has settled us in the home of duration out of His bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness [of mind]. (Surah Fatir verse 35)

They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin – Only a saying: “Peace, peace.” (Surah Waqiah 25-26)

“And below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? Dark green [in colour]. In both of them are two springs, spouting. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? In both of them are fruit and date palms and pomegranates.“ (Surah Ar-Rahman verse 62-68)

“The description of Paradise which the righteous have been promised is that in it are rivers of water the taste and smell of which are not changed; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey (clear and pure) therein for them is every kind of fruit; and forgiveness from their Lord..” (Surah Muhammad verse 15)

They will long to leave the Fire, but never will they leave there; and theirs will be a lasting torment. (Quran 5:37)

Surely, God has cursed the disbelievers and has prepared for them a flaming Fire wherein they will abide forever. (Quran 33:64)

No food will there be for them except from a bitter, thorny plant which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger. (Quran 88:6-7)

Surely the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness, the Gardens of Paradise will (duly) be their hospitality. (18:107)

Say, “Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination. (25:15)

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Beneath them rivers will flow in the Gardens of Pleasure (10:9)

[All] sovereignty that Day is for Allah; He will judge between them. So they who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure. (22:56)

Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. It is that which is the great attainment. (9:72)

Will there be envy in Paradise?

No there will not be envy or any negative emotions in Heaven, that’s what is known about Heaven in Islam as Allah almighty says in the holy Quran:

“We will remove whatever bitterness they had in their hearts.1 In a friendly manner, they will be on thrones, facing one another.” [al-Hijr 15:47].

  • Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The first group to enter Paradise will look like the moon when it is full. They will not spit or blow their noses or defecate therein. Their vessels there will be of gold, and their combs will be of gold and silver, their incense burners will be of aloeswood and their sweat will be musk. Each of them will have two wives, the marrow of whose calves will be visible from beneath the flesh because of their beauty. There will be no dissent or enmity among them and their hearts will be as one, and they will glorify Allah morning and evening.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 3073) and Muslim, 2834)
  • Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “ The last one to enter Paradise will be a man, who will walk a little, then fall on his face, then the Fire will touch his face and leave its mark on it, then when he has passed it, he will turn back to look at it and will say: Blessed be the One Who has saved me from you; Allah has given me something that He has not given to any of the first and the last.” (Narrated by Muslim, 274)
  • Ibn ‘Atiyyah al-Andalusi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Everyone in it will be granted contentment with his situation, and he will not believe that anyone has been given something better than him. We know from the religious texts that the people of Paradise will vary in status, commensurate with their good deeds, and commensurate with the grace of Allah to whomever He wills.” (Al-Muharrar al-Wajiz fi Tafsir al-Kitab al-‘Aziz. 2/91) See also: al-Jannah wa’n-Nar (available in English under the title Paradise and Hell) by Shaykh ‘Umar Sulayman al-Ashqar (154-163).
