Prophet Adam was the first man and the first prophet who is known as the “Father of Humankind”.

From the story of Adam, we learn the most important lesson, we learn that Satan is our eternal enemy, his purpose in life is to mislead humans, and he will never stop. Therefore, we should do our best not to listen to his whispers and follow Allah’s guidance.

What is the story of the prophet Adam? How did it start?  Let’s find out.

Who was Prophet Adam and what is his significance in Islamic history?

Prophet Adam was the first human to be created and the first prophet, he is the “Father of Humankind”. Allah Almighty decided to create humans and he informed the Angels that humans would be his successor on earth. Angels had their concerns that humans will only corrupt the earth, but Allah answered them that he knows what they don’t know.

Wa iz qaala rabbuka lil malaaa’ikati innee jaa’ilun fil ardi khaleefatan qaalooo ataj’alu feehaa mai yufsidu feehaa wa yasfikud dimaaa’a wa nahnu nusabbihu bihamdika wa nuqaddisu laka qaala inneee a’lamu maa laa ta’lamoon

“˹Remember˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a successive ˹human˺ authority on earth.” They asked ˹Allah˺, “Will You place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood while we glorify Your praises and proclaim Your holiness?” Allah responded, “I know what you do not know.” [Qur’an 2:30]

What is the story of prophet Adam? Here it is:

1. The creation of prophet Adam.

Allah created prophet Adam from clay, as Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“˹Remember, O  Prophet˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being from clay.”

So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”

[Quran 38, 71: 72]

2. The prostrate of Angels before Adam.

When Allah created prophet Adam (peace be upon him) he ordered angels to prostrate before him and they all did except Iblis who refused and said that he was better than Adam:

So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”

So the angels prostrated all together—

but not Iblîs, who acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful.

Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Own Hands? Did you ˹just˺ become proud? Or have you always been arrogant?”

He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.” [surah sad, 72: 76]

Then Allah said to Iblis:

“Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed.”

And surely upon you is My condemnation until the Day of Judgment.”

Satan appealed, “My Lord! Then delay my end until the Day of their resurrection.”

Allah said, “You will be delayed

until the appointed Day.”

Satan said, “By Your Glory! I will certainly mislead them all,

except Your chosen servants among them.” [Surah Sad, 77: 82]

Allah then ordered prophet Adam to go to the angels and greet them with: “As-salaamu alaikum (peace be upon you).” when he did so the angels responded with “Wa-alaikas-salamu wa rahmatullah (May the peace and mercy of Allah be with you too).”

Then Allah said to Adam “This is your greeting and the greeting of your children among each other.” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3367)

3. Prophet Adam and his miracle of knowing the name of everything.

Allah blessed prophet Adam (peace be upon him) with knowing the names of everything, which is a blessing that was not given to anyone or any creature. Allah taught Adam the names of everything, as Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31).

Allah almighty blessed prophet Adam with knowledge and will to learn and acquire more knowledge. He had the power to learn and understand the nature of all creations. Then Allah took Adam to angels and asked him To tell the angels the names of the things he asked them about but they did not know them.

He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?”

They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

“Then Allah said to Adam: “Tell them the names of these things.”And when he had told them the names of all things, Allah said: “Did I not say to you that I know everything about the heavens and the earth which are beyond your range of knowledge and I know all that you disclose and also all that you hide?”” (Surah Al-Baqarah 31: 33).

4. The creation of eve.

Allah created Eve from Adam’s rib while he was asleep.

“O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both, He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and ˹honour˺ family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.” [Quran 4: 1]

“He is the One Who created you from a single soul, then from it made its spouse so he may find comfort in her.” [surah al a’raf, 189]

5. Prophet Adam and the Forbidden Tree.

Prophet Adam and Eve lived in paradise and enjoyed its blessings. They were free to explore it and live as they wanted. But Allah forbade them from doing one thing which is approaching a specific tree.

˹Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.” [Al-A’raf, 19]

However, Iblis whispered to them to eat from that specific tree:

Then Satan tempted them in order to expose what was hidden of their nakedness. He said, “Your Lord has forbidden this tree to you only to prevent you from becoming angels or immortals.”

And he swore to them, “I am truly your sincere advisor.” [surah Al-A’raf 20: 21]

Unfortunately, prophet Adam and eve listened to Iblis and ate from the tree:

So he brought about their fall through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their nakedness was exposed to them, prompting them to cover themselves with leaves from Paradise. Then their Lord called out to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and ˹did I not˺ tell you that Satan is your sworn enemy?”

They replied, “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be losers.” [surah Al-A’raf 22: 23]

6. Adam repented and asked Allah for forgiveness.

When prophet Adam and Eve ate from the tree Allah said to them:

“Did I not forbid you from that tree and did I not tell you that Satan is your sworn enemy?”

They replied, “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be losers.” [surah Al-A’raf 22: 23]

They both repented to Allah and asked for his forgiveness and Allah accepted their supplication and sent them both to earth.

7. Life on earth.

Allah sent prophet Adam and Eve to earth:

Allah said, “Descend as enemies to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”

He added, “There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.” [surah Al-A’raf 24: 25]

Life on earth was completely different from the life they had in paradise, and the worst thing is that Iblis didn’t stop his whispers trying to mislead Adam, Eve, and their children.

8. Adams children.

When prophet Adam’s children reached the age of mirage Allah instructed Adam to marry each son to his brother’s twin sister. Abel accepted to follow Allah’s command but Cain refused, he wanted to marry his twin because to him she was more beautiful.

When prophet Adam didn’t know what to do in this situation he asked for Allah’s guidance. Allah commanded each son to offer a sacrifice and He would favor the son whose sacrifice he accepted. Abel offered Allah Almighty his best lamb, but his brother Cain offered his worst harvest. Allah Almighty accepted the sacrifice of Abel and refused the other. However, Cain didn’t accept that and he threatened to kill his brother.

Relate to them in truth ˹O Prophet˺ the story of Adam’s two sons—how each offered a sacrifice: one’s offering was accepted while the other’s was not, so he threatened his brother˺, “I will kill you!” His brother replied, “Allah only accepts the offering of the sincerely devout.

If you raise your hand to kill me, I will not raise mine to kill you, because I fear Allah—the Lord of all worlds.

I want to let you bear your sin against me along with your other sins, then you will be one of those destined to the Fire. And that is the reward of the wrongdoers.”

Still, the other convinced himself to kill his own brother, so he killed him—becoming a loser.

Then Allah sent a crow digging ˹a grave˺ in the ground ˹for a dead crow˺, in order to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. He cried, “Alas! Have I ˹even˺ failed to be like this crow and bury the corpse of my brother?” So he became regretful.” [Surah Al-Ma’idah 27: 31]

That was the story of prophet Adam from the Quran and sunnah. You can learn about heaven in Islam and the family tree of prophets and acquire more information if you want.

Is Adam a prophet in Islam?

Yes, Adam is a prophet in Islam, he is the first human to be created and the first prophet.

Then Adam was inspired with words ˹of prayer˺ by his Lord, so He accepted his repentance. Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.

Where did prophet Adam land on earth in Islam?

The holy Quran doesn’t mention where the prophet Adam landed on Earth and there are no Sahih hadiths regarding the matter.

Allah blessed prophet Adam (peace be upon him) with the blessing of knowing the names of everything, which is a blessing that was not given to anyone or any creature. Allah taught Adam the names of everything, as Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31).

Did prophet adam built kaaba?

The Kaaba in Islam is the first house built for us to worship Allah. Allah Almighty says in the holy Quran:

“Surely the first House ˹of worship˺ established for humanity is the one at Bakkah—a blessed sanctuary and a guide for ˹all˺ people.” (Aal `Imran 3:96)

However, there is no verse or sahih hadith to prove that the Kaaba was built by prophet Adam (peace and blessings be upon him).

What are the key events and lessons from the story of Prophet Adam?

Arrogance and pride are inevitably the results of loss and destruction. See how Allah dethroned Satan from his angelic status and drove him out of heaven, bringing with him curses that will last until the Day of Judgment because of his arrogance and conceit in defying Allah’s orders to bow down.

We learn that One of God’s greatest blessings to man is that he gave him the ability to learn. And that whenever a person sins he should repent to Allah and ask for his forgiveness knowing deep inside and having strong faith that Allah will forgive him.

We also learn from the story of prophet Adam that the real and permanent enemy of humanity is Satan. The devil will stop at nothing to mislead as many descendants of Adam as possible until the Day of Judgment.

How does Prophet Adam’s story reflect the mercy and wisdom of Allah?

Allah instructed Prophet Adam (peace and blessings be upon him) and Eve not to touch the tree, Iblis managed to mislead them and convinced them to eat from it. Even though they disobeyed Allah, Allah forgave them and accepted their repentance showing them mercy and forgiveness.

˹Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.” [Al-A’raf, 19]

Allah said, “Descend as enemies to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”

He added, “There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.” [surah Al-A’raf 24: 25]

The story of Prophet Adam in the Quran.

Here is the story of prophet Adam in the holy Quran:

So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”

So the angels prostrated all together—

but not Iblîs, who acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful.

Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Own Hands? Did you ˹just˺ become proud? Or have you always been arrogant?”

He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.” [surah sad, 72: 76]

He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31).

They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

Then Allah said to Adam: “Tell them the names of these things.”And when he had told them the names of all things, Allah said: “Did I not say to you that I know everything about the heavens and the earth which are beyond your range of knowledge and I know all that you disclose and also all that you hide?” (Surah Al-Baqarah 31: 33).

“O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate,1 and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and ˹honour˺ family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you.” [Quran 4: 1]

˹Allah said,˺ “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat from wherever you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.” [Al-A’raf, 19]

Allah said, “Descend as enemies to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”

He added, “There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be resurrected.” [surah Al-A’raf 24: 25]

Relate to them in truth ˹O Prophet˺ the story of Adam’s two sons—how each offered a sacrifice: one’s offering was accepted while the other’s was not, so he threatened ˹his brother˺, “I will kill you!” His brother replied, “Allah only accepts ˹the offering˺ of the sincerely devout.

Then Allah sent a crow digging a grave˺ in the ground ˹for a dead crow˺, in order to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. He cried, “Alas! Have I even failed to be like this crow and bury the corpse of my brother?” So he became regretful.” [Surah Al-Ma’idah 27: 31]
